Dissecting Intersectional Microaggressions within Fitness Spaces and Strategizing the Tools for Creating Safe(r) Spaces
The field of fitness is filled with opportunities for intersectionality – various combinations of race, gender, and sexual orientation are present within this vibrant space. Unfortunately, this intersectionality also comes with various combinations of microaggressions – subtle, commonplace verbal or nonverbal slights that often go unnoticed or unaddressed. These microaggressions often create “unsafe spaces” for all parties involved that can negatively impact the participation and the experience within these spaces.
The purpose of this open forum discussion is to provide trainers & studio owners within this field:
- The opportunity to discuss and process some of the hurdles they have and currently face
- Create a safe space for these stakeholders to discuss their concerns
- Allow for the creation of strategies and the sharing of ideas to help make “unsafe spaces” better & more conducive for healthy growth
Please join us at RYU Williamsburg on March 20that 7pm for an open, productive, functional and most importantly, safe, conversation.
