Using Business Tactics to Improve Your Life: SMART Goals

Setting SMART goals is a great way to actively better your life, but when done incorrectly it can also add to your overall stress and anxiety.  In learning to set SMART goals you can ensure that your goals are contributing to your life in a positive way.  This theory is fundamental in many aspects of business, including the creation of successful marketing campaigns and accounting targets.

S.M.A.R.T stands for:

  1. Specific

    Ensure that your goals are clear and straightforward.  It can be helpful to have your goals written down or put up on a vision board to help visualize them and turn them into reality.

    Non-specific Goal: Get better at Excel

    SMART Goal: Take 2 Excel courses this year.

  2. Measurable

    To increase the likelihood that you attain your goals, try setting targets that are defined and can be tracked with concrete examples.  You can also use these measurements to make sure that you are on track and see your progress over longer periods of time.

    Undefined Goal: Lose weight.

    SMART Goal: Lose 5 lbs.

  3. Attainable

    Make sure your goals and targets are attainable.  If you set unrealistic goals, it only serves to make you upset when you don’t achieve them.  It is totally fine to have smaller, more realistic goals! Get in the habit of frequently setting new goals, smashing them and moving on to the next ones. There are certain things that you can’t do, no one can do everything.  Instead of focusing on things you can’t achieve, focus on taking small steps to improve your life.

    Unattainable Goal: Run a 3-minute mile.

    SMART Goal: Beat your own personal record by 30 seconds.

  4. Relevant

    When setting goals, keep in mind your own personal and professional situation.  If a goal is interfering with your job or other targets, then it might not be relevant and other goals should be prioritized.  This is common, especially with people who take on a lot of projects.  Become aware of your limits to ensure that you don’t have too much on your plate.  Make sure your goals are pertinent to your skills, situation, and aspirations.

    Irrelevant Goal: Travel to Europe and start a new job.

    SMART Goal: Travel to Europe then start a new job.

  5. Time-Bound

    Establishing time frames for your achievements is crucial in utilizing your goal setting talents to their full potential.  By giving your goals time constraints you can ensure that your progress is on track and reward yourself for your achievement.

    Unconstrained Goal: Learn to code.

    SMART Goal: Learn to code in the next 6 months.

Getting S.M.A.R.T

Overall, setting smart goals is meant to improve your life, not add to your stress-load.  If you are feeling strained by your objectives, try taking smaller steps every day that will bring you closer to your goals.  Practice self-love and being in tune with yourself – it’s ok to need a break – remember that success is a process that comes from creating healthy habits.  You can reevaluate your goals at any time if they become too hard, too easy, or are no longer relevant to your life.  They are a tool you use to make yourself better and shouldn’t be feared.  Be SMART and in control of your future by taking your goals to the next level!
